City of Amarillo Special Rental Assistance Program: 378-3098  509 E. 7th St.

Provides rental assistance to homeless.  Waiting list may vary from 18 months to 1 year.

 

Fit Program: (Families in Training) Panhandle Community Services  372-2531
This program is geared to defray costs in rent while families are enrolled in post-secondary education.

Habitat for Humanity:

Every Saturday at 10:00 am. a person can go fill out application for a home.  If a person qualifies, they can get a house for about $300 month.  There is no interest and no closing costs.  People must be willing to volunteer 500 hours towards building another home for someone else after they get a home.  They require the last 2 years income tax returns, pay stubs, etc.  Call for details.

Housing for Single Parent (with or without children):
   1.   Buckner Family Place:  373-3422 (Able)  1615 S. Tyler

         This place is for single parent who are working or going to school. 

          A case manager will help parent get signed up for programs necessary
          to be successful.  Rent is required and HUD is accepted.

    2.  Martha's Home:  1204 W. 18th  372-4035 

        This place is a long term shelter.  Parent must work or go to school.  Interview,
         setting goals and working towards goals are expected during
         the stay. No children over age  10. Each person has chores
         and rules to follow.

   3. Sunshine Cottage:  355-3572  (Eveline Rivers)

        This is a place that requires women to be attending school and
        working towards goals.  Must be a 2 year or 4 year degree.  This is for homeless, low or moderate income only. Must  follow rules and pay rent.

If a person wants to get HUD housing within the Amarillo City Limits they can call this number.  Applications are taken the first Tuesday of each month.  8am - 4pm, assists with emergency repairs - (home owner, low income)

This is a housing facility that houses students after they have left foster care and who are at risk of becoming homeless. They have private apartment in the "Meredian Building" and comes with case management, laundry facilities, etc.  The cost is $300a month, all bills paid.   If an AISD student is homeless, contact Edna Schwartz @ 374-2779
