In 1st grade this week we are studying the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The Lorax is a book about the Once-ler. The Once-ler chopped down a Truffula tree and then knitted a thneed. The thneed was then sold and the Once-ler began to cut down more Truffula trees. The Lorax, who speaks for the trees, asked the Once-ler to quit cutting the trees down. But the Once-ler didn't and eventually drove all of the animals out of town because their homes had been destroyed. Eventually, the last Truffula tree was cut down and the Lorax was "lifted away by the seat of his pants" and left the Once-ler with the word "unless". The Once-ler then passed the last Truffula seed to a small boy and told him to plant the seed so that the Lorax and all of his friends could come back. We are doing many wonderful activities with this book one is about recycling and helping out the environment!!

Yes I would like to announce that the High School Art Department will be participating in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event a.k.a. VASE this Saturday at Amarillo High school. The event is being run by Region 16 for all area high schools and will begin at 8:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Our eight Highland Park student entrees will be judged between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. by a panel of artists and college professors. Wish us luck and come by this Saturday the 27th and join in the free activities, workshops, and demos that will be going on during this event.

The seventh graders recently studied simple machines and forces. They spent a day doing a simple machine lab building various machines. They found out reading and working with their partner to follow the instructions was an important skill to build the machines. Simple machines make our daily lives much easier.

Five students worked for months to construct a welding trailer that was taken to competition in San Antonio at the stock show. Trenton, Lance, David, Kaide, and Aidan received a Blue Ribbon for the trailer they built, which allowed them to be eligible for an overall placing. These students were highly complimented on their workmanship and design. The students were in the top 10 of their class.
